The Talking Stick is a common method for both use as a speaking prompt and group management tool during reflective discussions. It provides an opportunity for each person to talk without being interrupted. The actual prop needed for a Talking Stick can be literally anything you want it to be. It could be a stick you pull out of the woods or it could be something more elaborate that you put some time and effort into creating. The personal bag of tricks at Training Wheels full of the weirdest props known to man and one of them is a giant FROG. One day we were using the FROG as the talking stick when we decided to come up with an acronym using the letters that make up the word FROG.

F: Feedback

R: Resources

O: Observations

G: Goals

Feedback: Feedback is a reaction or response to a particular process or activity. We ask participants to give or receive feedback to each other.

Resources: Resources in team development are a source of supply, support, or aid, especially one that can be readily drawn upon when needed. We have participants talk about what resources they offer the group and who they can go to for help.

Observations: Observations are an inference or a judgment that is acquired from or based on observing behaviors. We ask the group to describe positive and negative behaviors the team has observed.

Goals: Goals are the purpose toward which an endeavor is directed or an objective of some kind. Goals are often something we strive to acheive. We ask the group to set action plans or goals around the conversations that were discussed in the FRO stage.

Our personal FROG is tatooed with other acronyms and helpful team management tools. This is one that we came up with that we find quite helpful. Feel free to use whatever frog you can find (preferably fake frogs or your conversation might jump away!), or you can get your very own giant FROG like ours by purchasing one today!
